Main and Kingsley Pedestrian Crash

Information About The Crash

On January 25, 2023, Reddit user Skinnylove7811 started the thread Car Accident at Main and Kingsley?  The thread asks if anyone had any information about the crash and mentions that a Nextdoor post about the crash had apparently been deleted.

Page 5 of the Transportation Projects Update, which was shared during the March, 2023 Transportation Commission meeting, describes an “incapacitating crash” at the intersection of Main and Kingsley.

On June 5, 2023, after multiple FOIA requests, the complete UD-10 and Advanced Crash Investigation documents were released to CIAA.  The reports describe how the pedestrian stepped into the crosswalk across Main St. from the southwest corner of Main and Kinglsey.  While in the crosswalk, she was struck by a vehicle going through the intersection.

The narrative of the UD-10 report (excerpted below) describes that the driver was entering the intersection at the end of the cycle (“…signal had just started to cycle to yellow”).  The narrative also describes a differing witness account, stating that the vehicle involved in the crash may have entered Main from Kingsley.

The advanced crash reconstruction report (PDF) indicates that there is no other evidence (like camera footage) to support one narrative or the other.  However, the report does mention, in the driver’s statement, that his origin was Brighton and his destination was his child’s preschool in Ann Arbor.  The author of the report observes that for the trip from Brighton to downtown, going south on Main (and not west on Kinglsey) would be the logical route.
