Information About The Crash
On January 6, 2023, the Ann Arbor Fire Department posted on their Facebook page that they had responded to a “pedestrian struck” near Station 3.
PEDESTRIAN STRUCK – January 6, 2023 at 5:50 PM – Engine 1-3, shift 1, responded on a pedestrian struck just west of Station 3 on Jackson Ave in front of Vets Park. The 60 year-old patient was in critical condition with CPR performed on scene. Pulses were regained, and the patient was transported by HVA to University Hospital. Engine 1-3 was in quarters at the time of incident and was able to quickly provide care. AAPD is investigating.

This incident was not included in the crash list that is attached to the City Administrator’s monthly report, which included other crashes from January.
The UD-10 report was released to CIAA in response to a FOIA request. The crash report describes that the pedestrian’s action prior to the crash was “Crossing not at Intersect”. The diagram in the crash shows that the crash happened at the intersection of Burwood and Jackson. There are no crosswalks in that area, even at the intersections of the side streets. The Google Maps satellite image of this part of Jackson Rd. shows the distance between crosswalks here is almost 4,000 feet.

Recommendation
Crosswalks. The distance between crosswalks here is indefensible. Pedestrians are given no viable option other than crossing where there is no crosswalk. People in wheeled mobility devices have an additional difficulty since the only curb cuts are driveways.
Ann Arbor and MDOT need to expedite the construction of crosswalks on Jackson Rd.
