Catherine and Ingalls Pedestrian Crash

Information About The Crash

On March 7th, 2023, the Ann Arbor Police Department posted the following on Facebook:

On 3/6/23 at approximately 2:45pm officers responded to a vehicle vs pedestrian hit-and-run crash that occurred at the intersection of Catherine Street and Ingalls Street. The victim, a 21-year-old University of Michigan student was struck while walking southbound trying to cross the intersection. The driver fled the scene and was last seen going westbound on Catherine.  The victim suffered significant lower leg injuries which will require surgery. She was transported to University of Michigan Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  The vehicle involved is believed to be a dark gray 2021 Dodge Charger that should have minor damage to the right front and will also be missing its passenger side mirror.

Anyone with information is asked to contact AAPD at 734.794.6920 or can email the tip line at tips@a2gov.org.

The UD-10 report tell how a pedestrian was crossing Catherine from the northeast corner of Catherine and Ingalls, when she was struck by a car that did not stop.  From damaged parts left at the scene, investigators later determined the car to be a 2021 Dodge Charger.

Excerpt from the AAPD crash report.

A picture from March 11, 2023 shows how drivers heading west on Catherine approach the intersection by climbing a steep hill.  Pedestrians crossing at Ingalls may have difficulty seeing vehicles approaching from downhill.  The hill is also obvious in the Google Street View of the intersection when viewed from the perspective of the approaching driver.

Recommendations

Expert Analysis of the Crash.

My primary recommendation is that the experts from the City of Ann Arbor evaluate this intersection for any possible improvements.

Stop Sign or Traffic Calming

One possible improvement is a stop sign for vehicles on Catherine.  Traffic calming devices, like a mini-roundabout or curb bumpouts would also help to slow traffic on Catherine as it approaches Ingalls.

Do you have experience as a driver or pedestrian in this area?  Is there something else that could be done to improve safety at the intersection of Catherine and Ingalls?  Please share in the comments.

UPDATE: this intersection has been improved to include a stop sign for westbound Catherine traffic.
